All about smartphones and “waterproof” connected objects

We have all heard about smartphone and waterproof or waterproof connected devices, without really knowing what it really meant. So water resistance does not mean tightness. Some explanations are needed to understand the different terms and acronyms used by manufacturers.

When we see a connected object or a smartphone with a “watertight” sign, most of us understand that they can use it in the rain, in the shower and even in the pool or at the sea. all these uses are not equal.

The IP protection class

The protection index is a standard defined by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). This index classifies the level of protection that a material offers to intrusions of solid and liquid bodies. The first digit of the IP code represents the degree of protection against the intrusion of solid foreign objects such as fingers or dust. This index ranges from 0 to 6. The second digit of the code represents the degree of protection against moisture intrusion with an index ranging from 0 to 8.

An IP code with an “X” in place of one of the two digits means that the product has not been tested against the intrusion of solid or liquid bodies. For example, a device with the IPX7 rating can withstand immersion up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes, but its resistance to dust has not been tested.

The tables below list the protection ratings validated by the IEC.

1 Protection against contact with any large body surface such as the back of the hand, but no protection against deliberate exposure to a body part such as a finger. less than 50 mm
2 Protection against fingers or similar objects. less than 12.5 mm
3 Protection against tools, thick cabling and equivalent. less than 2.5 mm
4 Protection against most cables, screws and equivalents. less than 1 mm

6
Protection against strong water jets from all directions with a 12.5 mm diameter hose. 3 minutes to 3 meters away Rain, splashes, direct contact with bathroom or kitchen faucets, outdoor use in heavy seas.
7
Protection against immersion up to 1 m deep for 30 minutes. 30 minutes Rain, splashing, accidental immersion.
8
Protection against immersion more than one meter deep (the builder must mention the exact depth). Variable Rain, splashing, accidental immersion.

What you must remember :

  • Resistance tests are mainly carried out in fresh water and your devices are not guaranteed for seawater unless specifically mentioned by the manufacturer.
  • The devices are tested for resistance in fresh water between 15 and 35 degrees Celsius.
  • Before immersing your appliance, make sure you have closed all the connection ports with the waterproof caps.
  • Most manufacturers guarantee prolonged immersion in clear water for a period of up to 30 minutes.
  • It is strongly recommended that you do not expose your device to high water pressure.
